Lewes has a direct train to London Victoria and the fastest ones do it in 1 hour 10 minutes. That is the number that matters if you are deciding whether to commute from here, and it is a good deal slower than the Kent commuter towns people often compare Lewes to. An annual season ticket costs £5,680.

The bigger point for the district is that Lewes station is the only one in it with a direct London service. Seaford, Newhaven and the rest of the branch change here, which adds a leg to the journey and about £556 a year to the ticket.

Lewes to London Victoria

Lewes sits on the East Coastway line, and the London trains are the Southern services that run between Eastbourne or Ore and London Victoria. They leave Lewes, run north-west through the Downs, and join the Brighton main line at Haywards Heath, which is 21 minutes from Lewes. From there it is the fast line into Victoria.

The spread between fastest and average is only two minutes, which tells you something useful: there is no separate fast service to aim for. Almost every direct Lewes to Victoria train takes about the same time, so you can leave when you like without losing anything.

There is no direct Southern service from Lewes to London Bridge, Blackfriars or St Pancras. For those you change at Haywards Heath onto Thameslink, or at Clapham Junction. If the City rather than the West End is where you work, factor that change into the door-to-door time before you compare Lewes with somewhere on a Thameslink route.

What a season ticket costs in 2026

These are standard season ticket prices to London Terminals, which covers arrival at Victoria and the other central terminals but not the Underground.

Two things worth knowing before you buy.

The annual is worth it if you commute most weeks. Forty weekly tickets from Lewes cost £5,680, exactly the annual price. So an annual season pays for itself the moment you travel more than 40 weeks a year, and it also covers weekends and evenings, which the weekly does at no extra cost only for the days it runs.

London Terminals is not a Travelcard. From Seaford the version that adds Travelcard Zones 1 to 6, so you can use the Tube and buses, costs £7,432 a year rather than £6,236. That is a £1,196 decision, and it only makes sense if your office is not walkable from the terminus.

Seaford and Newhaven Town pay the same fare as each other because the fare is set by the whole journey, not by how far down the branch you start. If you live in Newhaven, that means the extra ten minutes of branch line to Seaford is free.

Getting to Lewes station

The station is at the bottom of the town on Station Road, a five-minute walk from the High Street, with Depot cinema immediately next to it on Pinwell Road.

If you drive in, note that roadworks on Church Lane have closed the Hereward Way public car park for the duration of the works, which run to 10 September 2026. That has taken a block of town-centre parking out of use during a period when commuters are competing for it.

From Seaford and Newhaven the branch is frequent enough that driving to Lewes to park is rarely worth it: 37 services a day run from Seaford to Lewes, first at 04:50 and last at 23:55, and the run takes 17 minutes.

Trains to Brighton

Not everyone here commutes to London. Brighton is the bigger local employment centre and Lewes is very well connected to it: 76 services a day, fastest 14 minutes, average 16 minutes, first train 00:13 and last 23:43. That is a better service than the London line by every measure, and it is a large part of why the Lewes housing market holds up against the rest of East Sussex.

Bonfire Night

Lewes Bonfire, on 5 November, is the one night a year when none of the above applies. Road and rail access into the town is heavily restricted from late afternoon, and in past years trains have not called at Lewes at all during the evening. Check Southern’s advice for the specific arrangements before you plan to travel that day rather than assuming a normal timetable.
