The road where it happened
The B2192 meets the A26 at Earwig Corner, the junction on the edge of Malling where the A26 leaves Lewes towards Uckfield. From there the A26 runs north through open country to the Wealden boundary.
The Department for Transport publishes every injury collision reported to the police, with its location. We took the five most recent years of that data, 2021 to 2025, and picked out the A26 in Lewes district.
On the stretch from Earwig Corner north to the Wealden boundary, the figures record:
- 26 injury collisions
- 4 of them fatal and 13 serious
- 44 people hurt: 4 killed, 18 seriously injured and 22 slightly injured
- 20 of the 26 collisions on sections with a 60mph limit
Of the four people killed, two were motorcyclists, one was a cyclist and one was in a car. One of those deaths, a motorcyclist in November 2024, was recorded at the Earwig Corner junction itself.
Across the whole of the A26 in Lewes district, which also takes in the road south to Newhaven, the same data records 74 injury collisions and 113 casualties over the five years. Six people were killed and 35 seriously injured.
These figures count only injury collisions reported to the police. Saturday’s crash is not in them, because the published data runs to the end of 2025.
What it means for you
If you were driving on the A26 between Lewes and Uckfield, or on the B2192 from Ringmer, at around 10pm on Saturday, check your dashcam before it records over the footage. Even a few seconds of either car on the approach can help.
For roadworks and closures on the A26 and the other routes around the town, see our Lewes roadworks and travel page.
This page will be updated with anything further Sussex Police publishes about the collision.
