Lewes Chamber has not announced 2026 Late Night Shopping. The last two both ran on the first Thursday of December, which points at Thursday 3 December.
Nobody has announced a 2026 date yet. Checked on 5 September, neither Lewes Town Council nor Lewes Chamber of Commerce has published anything about this year’s Christmas lights switch-on or Late Night Shopping.
That is normal for early September. The 2025 event page went up in the autumn, and the Chamber’s own announcements tend to land in November. This page will be updated the day a date appears.
The date to pencil in
Thursday 3 December. That is our inference, not an announcement, and it is worth saying why it is a reasonable one.
Late Night Shopping has fallen on the first Thursday of December two years running:
| Year | Date | Times |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Thursday 5 December | 6pm to 9pm |
| 2025 | Thursday 4 December | 6pm to 9pm |
| 2026 | Not announced | Not announced |
The first Thursday of December 2026 is the 3rd. If the pattern holds, that is the night. Do not book anything on it until the Chamber confirms.
Who runs what
This trips people up, because two organisations are involved and they do different things.
Lewes Chamber of Commerce organises Late Night Shopping, the evening itself: the road closure, the shops staying open, the market, the entertainment and the best dressed window competition.
Lewes Town Council provides the Christmas lights and hosts the switch-on at the Town Hall as the evening opens. The council only took the lights on fairly recently. Before that, the town had gone about 23 years without a formal switch-on, and the council’s own explanation is practical: Lewes has awkward rooflines, so ornate street lights have always been difficult to hang here.
The Mayor picks someone from the community to press the button and uses the moment to open nominations for the following year’s Civic Awards. Carmen Slijpen of the Depot cinema did it the first year back. In 2024 it was Zoe Smith of Lewes FC Women with two juniors from the Lewes Football Foundation.
What the evening actually involves
From the council’s 2025 listing, which is the fullest published account:
- Christmas market at Lewes Town Hall, entered from Fisher Street, 5pm to 9pm, more than 60 stalls
- 12 Star Christmas Trail around shops and landmarks, collect stamps, complete it to enter the raffle. Maps in the centre pages of The Lewesian, or from Lewes Castle, Seasons and Soulfit
- Santa’s grotto, which was at Lewes House in 2024
- Christmas Wish Tree, live music, street performers and food and drink stalls in the precinct and on the High Street
- Free festive cargo bike rides between trail stops
- Best dressed window competition, judged on the night by the Mayor and the Chamber president. It took two hours to judge in 2024, which tells you how many shops enter
Entry is free and no tickets are needed. The High Street closes to traffic from 6pm, so if you are driving in, park before then. Our parking in Lewes page has the tariffs, and it matters here: the district car parks only charge until 5pm, so an evening in town costs nothing to park for.
A warning about the old website
leweslatenightshopping.co.uk is stale. It still reads “Lewes Late Night Shopping 2024” and advertises Thursday 5 December, which was two years ago. It ranks well, and it will send you to the wrong night. The live sources are lewes-tc.gov.uk and leweschamber.co.uk.
No pantomime, but there is a Christmas show
Lewes has no pantomime. What it has instead is A Christmas Carol at Lewes Little Theatre, running Saturday 5 to Saturday 12 December 2026 at 7.30pm, with matinees at 2.30pm on both Saturdays, directed by Susie O’Hare. Tickets are on sale now through the theatre.
If the switch-on does land on 3 December, the theatre run starts two days later, which makes for a workable weekend.
